Home Health Aide of the Year 2006
|
 |
Doreen Murell
“I love my job,” said Doreen Murell. “You have to love something to do it well.” SAGE’s HomeCare Department has named Doreen SAGE Eldercare’s “2006 Home Health Aide of the Year.”
|
Doreen has lived in East Orange for 14 years, after emigrating from her native Guyana. She said proudly, “Working at SAGE was my first job in America.” According to Deborah Scales, Staff Manager in SAGE Eldercare’s HomeCare Department, Doreen is all you could wish for a Home Health Aide to be. “She is a joy to work with,” said Ms. Scales. “She works with an Alzheimer’s patient who has lost the ability to speak his native Chinese. Amazingly enough, she has worked out a special spoken ‘code’ with him, and now they are able to communicate very well.”
Doreen said of her client, “He will be 95 this year. When I arrive every day, he taps my shoulder and shakes my hand. I call him Papa. We understand each other.”
Remembering a long-ago lesson from her homeland, Doreen said, “In Guyana they have a saying: ‘Once a man, twice a child.’ When we were young, someone did for us, and when we get older, someone has to do for us again.” Serving our seniors is important, but also challenging. Doreen’s philosophy sums it up beautifully: “For this work, you must have love in your heart.”

| SAGE WORKSHOP |
Volunteer crafters
Do you need a chair caned or rushed? Does a table need repair? If you need furniture repair, the volunteer craftsmen at the SAGE Workshop can help.
Since 1961, the SAGE Workshop has offered the public fine-quality furniture repairing. The Workshop has especially earned a reputation for repairing and reweaving cane chairs. Prices are reasonable and depend upon the condition of the chair or furniture item to be repaired and the materials required in the restoration process.
The workshop volunteers will consider repairing any piece of furniture that can be carried into the workshop. The woodworkers also offer handcrafted gift or decorative items for sale. Currently the Workshop features a decorative wooden kitchen step stool and a childs caned Teddy Bear chair available in three sizes. The craftsmen will also consider special commissions.
None of the woodcrafters is a carpenter or furniture restorer by vocation; they have gained their skills through years of experience in woodworking and furniture repair as a hobby. New volunteers with basic skills and a love of craftsmanship are always welcome.
The Workshop is now located in the lower level of the SAGE building at 290 Broad Street and is accessed through a rear entrance.
Hours: Monday thru Friday, 9 am 12 pm
