Volunteers Sought for SAGE Shopping Service
Can you spare an hour or two a week to shop for groceries or run errands for senior citizens who are unable to do these chores for themselves? The SAGE Shopping Service has an urgent need for volunteers to help elderly persons with grocery shopping once a week on Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Grocery shopping takes only one to one-and-a-half hours and provides an opportunity to build personal rapport with a senior citizen. If you have young children at home you could easily bring them along with you to shop. Grocery shopping for senior citizens provides youngsters with experience in supermarket shopping and helps them establish a habit of volunteerism.
SAGE offers the Shopping Service in Summit, Berkeley Heights, and New Providence and through a grant from the Grotta Foundation for Senior Care, to older residents of Millburn, Short Hills and Springfield.
To volunteer for the Shopping Service, call Marianne Kranz at (908) 273-5554.

Volunteer of the Month

Astrid Hasbrouck is SAGE Eldercare's
Volunteer of the Month for June 2008
New Providence resident, Astrid Hasbrouck, has been delivering Meals on Wheels for SAGE since 1975. Astrid enjoys volunteering because she is a firm believer in helping people stay independent in their homes as long as possible. There is hardly a street in Summit to which Astrid has not delivered meals over a period of 33 years. We estimate that she has delivered over 20,000 meals to Summit residents since she first started volunteering. “You really get close to these people”, Astrid says of her recipients. “Sometimes we are the only ones who check in on them during the day.” Between Astrid and her partner, Joan Hoffmann, they have been serving meals for 74 years.
SAGE Eldercare thanks you, Astrid, for your long term commitment to the SAGE mission statement and your devotion to our clients.
